I’m restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang. I’ve stripped it down to a rolling chassis, and in the process discovered that the floor panels are rusted through in several places. I’ve also discovered evidence that the car had been in a front-end collision. I wanted to do a lot of the body work myself, but now I’m worried that cutting out the entire floor will cause the chassis to bend. I’m also worried that the chassis may already distorted due to the collision. How do I replace the floor without warping the chassis, and how can I be sure that the chassis is straight?

check with yearone I believe they sell floor pans, just cut out the old one, clean up the area and have the new pan welded in place.

There are a lot of places to get parts for your car. Any classic mustang catalog has just about every part you need. Check your front spars, the battery side is most likely rotted. You can replace those, as well as your floor pans. Just in front of the floor pans are your torque boxes. If those are ok then just cutting out the cancer should be ok. When you get to looking you will see where the heavier sections are, the ones to avoid. If it looks too bad, take it in, but if you decide to do the cutting and welding yourself, do one side at a time on flat solid ground. Get a Chilton’s and a few catalogs and some mustang mags and familiarize yourself with the different parts and it will start to get easier, then maybe make friends with a local speed or specialty shop. The guys that want to sell you stuff will usu. hook you up with good info so as to keep selling you stuff…..

The floor pain can be replaced by cutting them out and welding in new ones their are lots of after market company’s that make replacement body parts for your car. And as far as the body goes you can look at the gaps between all of the fenders and doors they should all have the same gaps. You can also look at the door and hood hinges you can tell if they were adjusted by looking at the paint around the hinges.

If I were you I would take it to a shop that does this kind of work. They would have the required tools for the job, and could have new panels in there in no time. You can buy these pans from places like year one, but unless you have done this before, you are in for more trouble than you bargained for. You can buy a book on how to do this, but it would seem cheaper to just take it somewhere and have it done right!! If you want it done right, and for it to look factory, don’t attempt to do this by yourself. Good Luck!!

Where there is a will there is a way . You can purchase a copy of the assembly manual for your can it will provide you all the measurements and gap dimensions .Installing a floor is a major project You will have to cut and drill and grind the spot welds
cut fit and weld the new floor in . You will have to Obtain Many expensive tools You could take a welding class and auto body class at local high school or recruit some experienced help Or pay a body shop there is no substitute for experience good luck

I had the same problem on my bosses 1965 pony stang and we bought the floor pans from a local ford dealership here in Houston(yes you can still special order them),because they were thicker and the molding of the sheet metal was so much more precise.. and MiG welded them in. No over heating and a perfect fit … It might have cost a little more than aftermarket but were talking a classic.. kind of like buying a real heart for a transplant or getting an artificial one… It’s just not worth the worry..
Now about your other problem after you get the floor pans in , take it to a reputable frame shop and have it checked. they may have to tweak it a little but it won’t hurt the floor pans.. good luck and E-Mail me a pic @ bartender101dd@yahoo.com

your best bet is to cover over it. that is the first year they came out with half chassis.
